Description

The ultrasonic hardness tester is used for the non-destructive measurement of the hardness of metallic components. The ultrasonic hardness tester operates using the ultrasonic contact impedance method. In the UCI method, a Vickers diamond on the test probe is excited by its natural resonance. When the test probe is pressed down, the oscillation frequency is dampened depending on the hardness of the surface and in relation to the modulus of elasticity of the material and the contact area. The surface hardness can be determined from the resulting frequency shift, taking into account a material characteristic curve.

The ultrasonic hardness tester operates on a non-destructive basis. Although a microscopically small indentation is created in the surface, this is not normally visible to the naked eye. Due to the shallow penetration depth of the Vickers diamond, the ultrasonic hardness tester is particularly suitable for surface-hardened components, such as those produced by nitriding or induction hardening. Typical applications include stamping tools, presses, thin-walled components, gears, turbine blades, camshafts and welded joints. However, the ultrasonic hardness tester is also suitable for many other applications in the field of hardness testing. Thanks to interchangeable probes with different contact forces, a wide range of applications can be covered.

After measuring the hardness of a component, the ultrasonic hardness tester displays various statistical values such as minimum, maximum and average values. Standard deviation and other coefficients can also be calculated, and a histogram can be displayed. As the ultrasonic hardness tester has an internal memory, the measurement data can be analysed using software after the measurement.
